When the Brothers Grimm changed their stories, they changed the mother to a stepmother. They did not want to ruin their own mother's legacy and how much they loved her. In the Grimm tale, the parents want to get rid of the kids so that they can survive. They do this by taking the children out into the forest and leaving them there. The parents lead the children into the forest late at night, Hansel leaves bright shiny pebbles to find their way back. After the parents leave them in the deep dark woods, the children make their way back. During the day the parents who failed the first time again brought Hansel & Gretel into the forest, and Hansel learning from his first experience dropped bread crumbs to find their way back.
In the movie instead of having the stepmother, there is the mother who is a stern but loving mother who yells at the children and that makes them got into the forest. No crumbs or parents wanting to get rid of the children because they are poor and have no food. The mother also does not die in the end like the fairytale, nor even die at all. The movie altought uses the same language as the original fairy tale, it deviates from the original tale by not having the mother die and the parents not wanting to get rid of the kids because they were out of food.
