Blog #8: Hansel & Gretel: Grimm vs MGM

Image
When the Brothers Grimm changed their stories, they changed the mother to a stepmother. They did not want to ruin their own mother's legacy and how much they loved her. In the Grimm tale, the parents want to get rid of the kids so that they can survive. They do this by taking the children out into the forest and leaving them there. The parents lead the children into the forest late at night, Hansel leaves bright shiny pebbles to find their way back. After the parents leave them in the deep dark woods, the children make their way back. During the day the parents who failed the first time again brought Hansel & Gretel into the forest, and Hansel learning from his first experience dropped bread crumbs to find their way back. In the movie instead of having the stepmother, there is the mother who is a stern but loving mother who yells at the children and that makes them got into the forest. No crumbs or parents wanting to get rid of the children because they are poor and have no f

Blog #6: "Cupid & Psyche" vs "Iron Henirich" (The Frog King)

Image
At the beginning of Cupid & Psyche, Venus sends down her son Cupid to punish Psyche for challenging Venus in terms of her immense beauty. Venus talks to Cupid about his mission: "My dear son, punish that contumacious beauty; give your mother a revenge as sweet as her injuries are great; infuse into the bosom of that haughty girl a passion for some low, mean, unworthy being, so that she may reap a mortification as great as her present exultation and triumph." Cupid takes two amber vases and fills them one with sweet water and the other with bitter water; from Venus's garden. When Cupid goes down from Venus's garden to punish Psyche, he drops some of the bitter water on her lips and in the process he pokes her with one of his arrows, Psyche wakes from this and in his panic, Cupid scrapes himself with of his arrow aswell. He started to pour drops of the sweet water to fix what he had done. Whereas in the Grimm fairy tale "The Frog King" or "Iron He

Blog #5: How Disney Changed Snow White

Image
When Walt Disney contaminated Snow White he changes a significant amount of content that wasn't even in the original fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. Content such as the focus on the Seven Dwarves by giving them names .and personalities, and having Snow White being somewhat of a figure of power in her contract with the Dwarves in that she told them what to do not them telling her what she should do in terms of her service to the household. Another change that Disney changed was how the prince played a role in the story, in the movie he professed his love for Snow White in the beginning and him saving her from the death by poison apple by a kiss. In the fairytale he wasn't mentioned until he just happened to show up and want to buy the coffin and not really seeing Snow White just putting her with an object and not really acknowledging her, and when he does get the coffin the servants who carry it down from the mountain slips and the coffin gets jolted and dislodged the apple fro

Blog #4: Rags to Riches

Image
Cinderella is a perfect example of rags to riches story the heroine goes from destitution forced upon her by her stepmother and being neglected by her own father to marrying the prince and becoming a princess. Although someone cannot go from destitution to being wealthy with magic in the real world, however, someone can achieve that through marriage similar to Cinderella. Someone can be in destitution or relatively poor and marry someone else who is rich or well off and through marriage, the riches can be inherited. This can be realistic in terms of finding someone who is rich and willing to share their wealth. You can also go from being poor to being rich by making companies, Big companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon some of the biggest companies started from nothing and created by college dropouts and rose through the ranks as the most profitable companies of all time. Take Apple for example created by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in what is now called Silicon Valley out of

Week 3: The Definition of a Fairytale

Image
Fairytales are an ever-evolving story that can be changed through the beliefs of the culture that is writing it and yet it also is timeless in it the way that it tells its story in how systematic it is. The Brothers Grimm are a great example by how they changed the stories that they collected, an example would be with how they changed sleeping beauty from the original version. When they would contaminate stories that they heard and collected, they would add inherently Christian motifs. The first part of the story used the motif of prophecy that the princess was destined to sleep for 100 years at the age of 15 which was proclaimed at her birth by the 13th fairy. They would also add a lot of detail Lüthi said this about how they changed their stories from one iteration to another "A comparison of the Grimm brothers' original notations with the final version of '"Sleeping Beauty"' shows what their poetic imagination and genesis for language they added." (Lü

Week 2 Comparing "The Brothers Grimm" to the real Brothers Grimm

Image
"The Brothers Grimm" by Terry Gilliam shows the Grimm Brothers going throughout Germany putting on shows to convince the locals that they are getting rid of the supernatural. After one of these shows or scams to put it harshly they are brought before a French general who persuades them to go a small village and find out what happened to the 10 girls who disappeared from the village. When they reach the village they meet Angelika who is the daughter of a woodsman who when missing aswell and the brothers started this sort of love triangle with her and it was a decent part of the movie. Comparing this to the real story of the Brothers Grimm they were never con artists or scammers they were deeply involved in their studies and want to show that Germany as a whole goes back to the dawn of civilization by telling stories that could only be told not written because they were brought down through the generations orally. There also never was an Angelika, Wilhelm did marry to Dortche

Week 1

Why did I choose this FYS? I've always been fascinated by mythology and the way that they tell stories, I took this class to see how the Grimm brothers told their stories and how Disney evolved or changed them into the beloved films and stories that we know today. Even though I knew who the Grimm brothers were before taking this class, I didn't know how many stories and contributions they had made to society. Another reason that I took this class was to learn how to better analyze film when you learn something about a specific topic it changes your perception of a film. What do I want to achieve this Semester? I want to see how the Grimm brothers evolved their stories over time as they grew more experienced, such as did anything change from their first fairy tale to the last one they had written? I also want to see how Disney took those fairy tales and changed them, and if there are any huge differences between the two. What is my favorite fairy tale? My favorite fair
